What is Peace Management

“Peace Management is a systematic, proactive approach to preventing and removing negative stress from a person’s life.”  The initial approach was developed by Associate Professor of Nursing and veteran practicing nurse Gina Marie McKee MSN, RN, CCRN.  Ms. McKee defines Peace Management as a way to “ live life from a place of Peace amidst a set of circumstances that present chaos, stress, confusion, fear and isolation.”[i]

Why Stress Management Programs are temporary fixes for resolving stress!

Many of us are familiar with what happens to our bodies when we become stressed.  As we experience these physical manifestations of stress, we are feeling the effects of our ‘fight or flight’ response.  When we are in life-threatening situations, our brains trigger the fight or flight response.  Stress hormones surge through our bodies to liberate us from what we perceive to be immediate physical danger.  When we repeatedly trigger the fight or flight response for events in our lives that are truly non-life threatening, we diminish our quality of life and our life expectancies. Since the 1980’s, literature has responded to the mounting levels of stress-related illness with stress and anger management programs.  Both approaches are to be hailed for starting to address the issue of stress. These efforts have created greater public awareness of the dire effects of excessive, prolonged stress on human life. Both approaches, however, have many serious shortcomings.  Most notably, stress and anger management techniques are reactive as they are implemented only after individuals have experienced a negative stress response.

Peace Management:  The Stress-Prevention Model

Peace Management, unlike stress and anger management, offers the promise of an optimally healthy existence free from negative stress.  Peace Management techniques are pro-active, thereby preventing negative stress from occurring.  Clearly, the absence of individual stress can offer more peace and harmony, thus increasing a woman’s satisfaction with her life.

The Life Coaching Approach to Peace Management
